Many Different Styles
Let’s face it — if you live in New York City, you definitely want to be able to defend yourself. Knowing just one style, whether it Jujitsu, Karate, Krav Maga, etc., will allow you to defend yourself on the mean streets of NYC.
Fortunately, there are many options when it comes to self defense classes in NYC. Let’s go over some of the big ones.
Krav Maga is an Israeli self-defense technique created by Imi Lichtenfeld in the early 20th century to combat the rise of anti-semitism in Europe. Krav Maga combines elements from various styles including Judo, boxing, Aikido, and wrestling. Krav Maga focuses on being able to neutralize threats, performing moves that let you attack the threat while in a defensive stance, and being aggressive as you do all of that. Basically, threats will be taken down (painfully) in a matter of seconds if you master this technique.
Jujitsu (also spelled ju-jitsu/jujutsu, jiu jitsu, or ju-jutsu) is a popular style from Japan that lets you defend yourself against an armed threat. Let’s say someone comes at you with a knife – if you know jujitsu, you’d be able to easily disarm and neutralize that threat. Jujitsu puts the focus on using the threat’s momentum against them by using throws, joint locks, and pins to take them down. It has spawned into many forms (including judo, Sambo, and Aikido) that are practiced all around the world, so you will definitely find a lot of variety when looking for jujitsu classes in NYC.
Karate is another popular style from Japan that puts a heavy focus on powerful striking. While it originated in Japan, it was influenced by Chinese martial arts of the time. This may be the style you’re most familiar with, as many cartoons and movies have shown their characters (poorly) doing Karate.
Mastering Karate lets you land swift and decisive strikes with your hands and feet on any unfortunate sap that dares mess with you in New York City. Some elements (such as throws and joint locks) of jujitsu are found in Karate, but the two are hardly alike and depending on your instructor, those aforementioned elements might not even be taught. And yes, the Karate scream, called Kiai, is taught as a means to express confidence or intimidate your foe.
Below is a YouTube video of an amazing 7 year old performing karate. If she can do it, there’s no reason that you can’t! Seriously, no one is ever going to mess with her now.
Below are self defense courses in each of the Five Boroughs:
These are just some of the self defense classes in NYC, all of which are more effective than a simple kick in the nuts (for all of you ladies out there). Also for the ladies, fear not – there are self defense classes in NYC for women, and just for women specifically.
What are you waiting for?!
Self defense is important, especially in a big city like New York City. Don’t take the risk of being robbed, assaulted, or possibly something much worse. It takes a lot work, devotion, and discipline. And even a little bit of cash. But in the end, it is completely worth it. The risk taken by enrolling in self defense courses in NYC is far less than the risk taken by walking on the streets without being able to defend yourself.
Next time that perp will think twice before trying to mug you.
